Fear, risk, fantasy, reality, love. 2017’s call Me by Your Name is a film that festers so slowly & methodically that it is able to lớn touch on each of these emotions, which are oftentimes intertwined but aren’t always able khổng lồ make that connection in art.

This Luca Guadagnino film, starring Timothée Chalamet (Elio) & Armie Hammer (Oliver), isn’t just an expression of the realization of a societally ‘unorthodox’ way of affection (the ‘oddity’ of which was addressed in a rather sly way, where Elio extended and shook his right hand with Marzia, the more conventional relationship, and found himself shaking his left hand with Oliver, or rather, the statue’s left arm) but finds itself reaching beyond.
What sets this story apart is that the coming out journey is only an act of the entire scope of the work, rather than the overarching plot. The reference lớn the budding relationship is subtly hinted at, particularly with the imagery of a hand reaching for an apricot high up on a tree, as if grasping for a forbidden fruit—just as Elio and Oliver explored their ‘peculiar’ affection.
The fear between the two men manifested itself in the size of possible rejection, as well as the potential of letting the moment pass và finding their grave, still wondering about the ‘what ifs?’. They ultimately avoided this pitfall và took the risk of exposing themselves to each other (in more ways than one) and began the second act of their journey—the exploration và honeymoon phase.
The complication here existed in the conflicted nature of their love. Oliver wasn’t sure if he was doing the right thing, potentially scarring a young man by forcing him into something he might not fully understand. While Elio assumed that Oliver had given up on their relationship và sought revenge for his ‘traitorous’ acts. This strife was soothed over by a fascinating scheduled meeting—the way the film showed us the killing of time and anticipation throughout the day, rather than abruptly jumping forward khổng lồ the moment, was absolutely a splendid use of film reel. Reaching a milestone in life doesn’t happen with the snap of a finger—it requires patience—and experiences don’t cease from moment khổng lồ moment but continually grow, lượt thích the seed of a fruit tree, & those happenings can involve influences that ultimately change the fate of incoming events. With this directorial choice, we found ourselves on a voyage within the larger expedition—one that helped give us a feeling of satisfying culmination when they finally found each other.

This is when the fantasy phase began. The telling became a pure love story—as if we were taken behind the curtains to watch their love blossom without any worries of the real world that awaited beyond the veil. They were able khổng lồ grow together, cry together, laugh together, lust together, và be a couple, together, without the poisonous expectations of community decaying their moments.
Unfortunately, reality has a constant presence, lượt thích a current that forces the river khổng lồ continuously flow, never allowing the water khổng lồ find a contented home, Elio and Oliver are forced lớn look their uncertain future in the eye, as the summer dream comes to a close.
The truth, whether we want lớn face it or not, is that there are outer-pressures và obligations that exist—they are placed upon us and force us to lớn sacrifice that which is most dear lớn us. The only thing we can bởi vì is take the advice of Mr. Perlman (Michael Stuhlbarg) and take our one heart that eventually wears out, our one toàn thân that eventually is never looked at, & plunge at the rare opportunities when we recognize them. Love is one of those special openings, no matter the khung it reveals itself in.
Call Me by Your Name was such adept storytelling, that it not only showed these ideas on screen but also found the footing to be able lớn evoke these feelings within the individuals sitting in their seats at home. Seeing the bounty of Elio & Oliver’s infatuation leaves us remembering the moments of purity that were either seized by us (and that we dearly miss) or the ones we let slip through our hands—a response khổng lồ a film that is a rarity within itself, showing why this adaptation is one lớn remember.
